Clerkenwell Calling:
A Day Inside London’s Most Creative Design Playground.

Clerkenwell Design Week transforms one of London’s most creative neighbourhoods into a celebration of innovation, craftsmanship and contemporary interiors. Home to more creative businesses and architects per square mile than anywhere else in the world, Clerkenwell provides the perfect backdrop for the UK’s leading design festival.

This year’s event brought together more than 600 showroom events, curated exhibitions, installations, talks and collaborations, showcasing both internationally recognised brands and emerging design talent across the district.

We began the day at Old Sessions House, one of Clerkenwell’s most atmospheric venues. The grandeur of the historic building created a striking contrast to the contemporary collections inside, setting the tone for a day focused on thoughtful design and materiality.

At String Furniture’s stand, we explored its timeless Scandinavian modular shelving systems, where clean lines and adaptable forms demonstrated how functional design can remain relevant and elegant decades after its creation.

Along the hallway, the work of Naomi Paul introduced a softer, more artisanal rhythm to the space. Using a single wooden hook and skilled handcraft techniques, she transforms natural fibres into hand-crocheted lighting forms, spanning pendants, wall lights and table lamps. Celebrating patience, texture and craftsmanship in an increasingly digital world.

We then moved on to Fox & Furb at St James's Church, where bespoke furniture and upholstery pieces were on display. One highlight was its upholstered bouclé four-poster bed with a built-in projector, blending comfort, craftsmanship and contemporary living in a playful, luxurious way.

Also, inside the church, Colour Ville presented its soft-textured alabaster lime paints, designed to create a relaxed, lived-in aesthetic. Launching its collection of 31 “ice cream”- inspired shades at CDW, the brand introduced rich, layered colours that enhance rather than mask a surface’s natural character. The chalky, imperfect finish gives a space an expressive, almost painterly quality, reinforcing the idea that paint itself can function as a form of art.

We also visited Plank Hardware, a London-based studio creating refined cabinet hardware, lighting and electrical accessories for contemporary interiors. The brand’s certified B Corp status reflects its commitment to thoughtful, responsible design. We especially loved their beautiful, brushed gold bobbin hardware - a simple, characterful detail with real charm.

Our final highlight was the Chelsom x Ian Mankin portable lighting collection. Launched as Chelsom approaches its 80th anniversary, the cordless range is designed for hospitality environments including hotels, restaurants, bars and cruise interiors. Combining decorative detailing with practical, hospitality-grade performance, the collection demonstrated how portable lighting can be both functional and beautifully crafted.

The day reinforced why Clerkenwell Design Week holds such importance on the global design calendar. It is not simply an exhibition of products, but a celebration of ideas, makers and creative communities. From established international brands to independent designers, every corner of the festival offered something considered, tactile and inspiring.
